How would you like your oysters? Steamed, Stewed or Nude? That was one of the steamiest day to be greeted by a luscious bed from of plump oysters. Daily specials of Fanny Bay, Kumamoto, Kusshi, and Village Bay babies all waiting to be shucked and slurped. Chewies Steam Oyster Bar is located just walking distance from Kits Beach on 1st Ave. In a nutshell, Chewies has that twist of New Orleans palate star crossed with the West Coast seafood vibe. Gumbo, Etouffee, Creole Mussels, and the infamous Fried Chicken and Waffles (here, here and here).
Freshly shucked oysters are pretty uniformed in size, plumpness, and freshness. Served with various hot sauces .
Caesar with a prawn on top! Visually the Caesar was promising with shaven horseradish and black pepper. The rim however was not well salted and there wasn’t enough kick to this concoction unlike here, here and here. Nonetheless, it put up a good fight.
BB shrimp & grits 15: New Orleans style beer & rosemary BBQ sauce, parmesan cheese grits. I realized I don’t have a fond appetite for grits. The texture and the coarse grainy taste did not sit well. On a positive note, the prawns were huge and had a good bounce. Flavors were good and I like the rosemary factor to the bbq sauce.
Southern Fried Chicken 18: Two day marinated buttermilk Rossdown Farms fried chicken, Cajun honey butter drizzle, mash & beans. The chicken was tasty and seasoned thoroughly. It was tender despite how dark it visually charred appeared to be. It would’ve been if it was a tad juicer.
