Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie’s buttery, puff pastry flutes have earned gold at the 2017 BC Food Processors Association (BCFPA) Product of the Year Award gala during FoodProWest.

The Product of the Year Award recognizes a product that shows innovation; criteria including taste (if applicable), product packaging, marketing, innovation, and environmental impact. 26 companies participated this year. The judging panel, chaired by Top Chef Canada’s Mijune Pak, included Vikram Vij, Overwaitea Food Group’s Ken Clark, White Spot’s Danny Marcowicz, Lyra Growth’s Charles Chang, Sobeys’ Jeff Nadon, and BC Ministry of Agriculture’s James Street.

“My team and I are so proud to win gold for our flutes, which are definitely a customer favourite at our shop,” explains Christophe Bonzon, pastry chef and owner of Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie. “When we first made them, we would often sell out and it was at that point we thought, why don’t we introduce our flutes to even more people. After working hard on the packaging and distribution, we finally made it happen. The reception for them has been wonderful. I’m so happy because they are actually an integral part of my Swiss culture. In Switzerland, flutes are often enjoyed as an aperitif option when hosting.”

Chez Christophe’s flutes, retailing for $5.95 each, come in three flavours – Cracked Sea Salt, Black Sesame, and Parmigiano. They are very versatile and can be enjoyed as is, paired with a variety of dishes like a charcuterie board, and complement wine tastings.

“The BCFPA Product of the Year event has gotten larger each year,” says BCFPA CEO James Donaldson. “Chez Christophe was a very deserving Gold Medal winner among 26 outstanding products receiving a nomination this year.”

Chez Christophe’s flutes can currently be found at more than 50 retail locations in B.C., Alberta, and the Yukon. B.C. locations include Chez Christophe, Gourmet Warehouse, Meinhardt, Urban Fare, Well Seasoned, Whole Foods, and Winsor Meats.
