Hoi Tong Chinese Seafood Restaurant 海棠海鮮酒家 is a tiny Chinese restaurant that offers traditional dishes with a modern twist served by the owner and chef, Mr. Leung Yeau Tong. It is close to Alleluia Cafe 歡欣餐廳 and is often overlooked. With only about 6 tables, reservations is a must. We came here one night for family dinner after hearing that it is one of the best restaurants in Richmond. It’s won awards: Chinese Restaurant Awards 2012. Service was prompt and food came out pronto.
Daily Soup: Chicken Feet, Cow Gram and Peanuts 花生眉豆雞腳湯: We could tell by the color density that the soup was not watered down. It is thick and intense.
Sauteed Pork Neck with Seasonal Greens: Chayote melon 合掌瓜 and black wood fungus are crisp and tender. Pork necks were cooked perfectly at a controlled temperature.
Stir Fried Shrimp, Egg White and Fish Maw: A lighter tasting dish fit for elder grandparents. An enjoyable dish when mixed with rice. Fresh. Simple.
Steamed Pork Cake with Preserved Salty Fish: A few nice cuts of salty fish steamed on top of the minced pork cake. A great traditional dish to accompany rice.
Chinese Deep Fried Young Chicken: Crispy skin and a tender body. Nicely seasoned but not too salty.
Daily Dessert: Taro Sago Sweet Soup 芋頭西米露: Semi sweet with a milky presence. It would be even better with some coconut milk.
Hoi Tong reminds me of private kitchens in Hong Kong with its intimate setting and limited crowd. Definitely would come back again for some more delicate dishes “小炒”.
