If New Orleans is a little far, than The Ouisi Bistro Vancouver on Granville Street is a great place to get your Southern, Cajun and Creole fix. The restaurant is easy to miss especially amongst clothing stores and big restaurants like West around the corner. Inside is a dimly lighted, intimate yet casual environment. The walls are covered with paintings depicting some downtempo Blues actions. Perhaps you can close your eyes and imagine a cigar-smoked filled and bourbon pouring room. Or you can just come every other Thursday for some live music.
Corn Bread: Came as a starter. It was warm, moist, but would’ve been better with a side of butter for it to drown in.
Jamaican Jerk Chicken: served with fresh pineapple salsa is more like little chicken stir fry in Cajun sauce.
Cajun Chili Fries: which reminded me more of a poutine than anything. Bold flavors and was great to have some substance over my fried potatoes.
Jambalaya: a classic Lousiana dish made with simmered tomatoes and smoked ham, andouille & chorizo sausage and two sautéed Gulf prawns
Southern Fried Catfish: buttermilk marinated and topped with Chow Chow relish and Cajun tartar. Not sure exactly Choq Chow relish is? It is green tomato relish with cabbage and some bell peppers. The fish was evenly battered that didn’t fall apart as the knife slid thru.
All entries comes with your choice of two sides. We picked mainly Lemon Braised Kale, Red Bean and Rice, Veggies, Potatoes Salad, Yam Fries. Generous portions but some were kind of bland tasting.
