Penang Delight Cafe Vancouver 馬來檳城美食 is located off the main roads and in a residential area of Marpole. They also have another location on Rupert St. It is best to make reservations as even on a Monday school night the place was jammed pack. Penang Delight Cafe Vancouver restaurant is decorated with an array of Malaysian food pictures and travel photos to help set the mood.
We began with a few Tiger Lager Beer and coconut jelly sweet slush.
Rainbow Ice Kacang: Shaved ice with rose, pandan, milk, palm sugar, syrup, sweet corn, jelly and red bean. It is similar to those found in local Vietnamese restaurants. This is a very sweet drink and is rather rich. If you aren’t a sweet tooth, perhaps ask them to reduce the syrups in half.
Malaysia Speciality Vegetable: Stir fried okra, eggplant, green bean with dried shrimp and chili. The dish greeted us with the wonderful smell of garlic and dried shrimp. Green beans were snappy and fresh and the soft eggplant was soft and soaked up the seasoning.
Curry Laksa: Choice of beef, chicken, fish ball or mix vegetable with yellow noodle and rice vermicelli, bean sprouts, fried tofu in coconut curry broth. The broth is thick and offers bold flavors. But I still find the flavors at Bo Laksa King to be more colorful and intricate with more spices.
Roti Canai: Crispy Indian style pancake served with curry dipping sauce. A nice crispy pancake that isn’t doughy yet has a nice elastic texture. The dipping sauce was very mild and is geared towards the sweet side.
Penang Satay: 4 skewers of either marinated chicken or beef skewers with peanut dipping sauce. The satays were juicy with a nice sear. The meat was seasoned and brined for that juicy, succulent tenderness.
Gado-gado: Indonesian style salad served with cucumbers, yam beans, bean sprouts, potatoes, tofu and top with peanuts sauce. The special thing about Penang Delight’s take on this dish is that the bean sprouts are blanched and then chilled. The raw taste and smell disappears.
Hainanese Chicken: Tender, chilled plump chicken served with fried garlic and a light soy sauce. This is similar to the Singaporean Hainanese chicken. Chili vinegar dipping sauce and minced ginger and green onion sauce on the side. Also, order a bowl of Hainanese oil rice and mix in the sauce!
Kuih Talam: Pandan and coconut cream layered glutinous steam cake. It reminded me a lot of the delicious pandan coconut ice cream from Bella Gelateria in downtown. I like how this dessert isn’t overly sweet. I would be even better if the pandan flavor was more intense. Best to pre-order. It is served from Thursday to Sunday.
