It was a cloudy Sunday afternoon after service at Tenth and we were all craving a little pho. Dave suggested there is this awesome chicken Pho place called My Chau on Kingsway, but alas they are closed on Sundays. Our friend suggested we try Pho Tan Vietnamese, corner of Main Street / 30th Ave, which is quite near King’s Chinese Cuisine 大煌 . There is plenty of street parking. We were promptly seated even for a busy Sunday for our group of seven. Pho Tan Vietnamese is dated decor with bamboo screens, paintings and sculptures. But does this really matter? Not really! This place is clean and it sure beats a lot of the other hole in the walls in this city.
Norm too Pho restaurants, we were served fresh bean sprouts, basil leaves and lime.
Pho Bo Satay 沙嗲牛肉粉 : This is Pho Tan ‘s specialty and perhaps the first I’ve seen in Vancouver. The broth has a good kick of heat and flavour. It reminds me of a Vietnamese version of Laksa. Served with thin fatty beef slices and al dente noodles.
Pho Bo Hué 順化泃粉: My spicy noodles came with a side of clear soup and ribs. The broth is mildly spicy, more fragrant, and more complex than the one at Bao Chau Vietnamese on Hastings. To make it more spicy I reached for the chili oil to pour over my Vietnamese ham and fatty beef.
Spring Rolls: Eyes wider than stomach we also ordered some crispy spring rolls to share. There was a good crunch to every bite and the fillings were generous.
Pho Bo: A simple standard clear broth that is flavourful and some beef slices, onions and garnish.
Lemongrass Chicken Rice: Nicely grilled and seasoned juicy chicken over broken rice and sausage patty. A generous serving along with some fish sauce. YUM!
Sour Sop: I love this slushy with a slight tart flavour. It is refreshing and enjoyable in any weather!
