We came home from San Francisco to perennially confusing weather here in Vancouver. But whether its finding that perfect Sunday get go in a cozy sweater or that pair of Nike kicks to the gym, brunch always finds itself on my foodie itinerary. And I will leave no man (or dish) behind. So with that it brought us to The Urban Tea Merchant once again. This time, it wasn’t over tea nor finger sandwiches. But over runny yolk and smoked fish. Sure it’s nice to have an afternoon tea over Darjeeling and Pu’er tea, but doesn’t that Mimosa and Veuve Clicquot sounds exciting?
Set Brunch includes your choice of either
- Orange juice 26
- Tea-infused Mimosa 36
- Champagne (Veuve Clicquot) 56
Eggs Benedict: Poached eggs with freshly made hollandaise and your choice of smoked salmon, spinach or ham. Served on toasted brioche and sprinkled with chives. I liked the toasted brioche because of the contrasting texture to the soft yolk. The hollandaise was creamy but towards the acidity side. What would’ve complemented well would be some addition of capers.
Seasonal teas are packaged in red, white, blue and gold. The Magic Christmas Tea comes as an elixir molten black hand-blown glass flask and encased in a royal velvet pouch. This could be the perfect gift to the tea-loving special someone. The Magic Christmas Tea: rooibos tea with citrus fruits and notes of dark chocolate. The Noel! Noel! Tea is a warm and gentle black tea with white Yin Zhen tea blend of fragrant spices and tones of clementine with rich Tahitian vanilla.
Scandinavian Smoked Fish: smoked trout, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, buttered haddock & pickled herring served with toast and capers, red onion & in-house crème fraîche. The smokey, savory, and pickled fishes were delicious and not something you would see on an everyday brunch menu.
